Cure Dog Cancer: Natural Cures for Your Dog's Prostate Problems

By Elizabeth A. Maginnis

Dog prostate problems include enlargement, inflammation and cancer. Enlargement is the most common problem occurring in intact male dogs. Non-cancerous prostate problems generally develop most often in older dogs and rarely in neutered dogs of any age. Herbal and homeopathic treatments and vitamin and mineral supplements are quite beneficial in the treatment of certain canine prostate issues. Canine prostate cancer, however, does not discriminate between intact and neutered dogs and is not treatable.

Herbs
Saw palmetto extract is known to shrink swollen prostate tissue in humans and pets and has been used as such in Europe for some time. Nettle root contains anti-inflammatory agents and is best used to treat prostate swelling caused by infections. It can be used with saw palmetto to address canine prostate issues. Echinacea supports your dog's immune system and is particularly helpful with prostate infections. Be sure to confirm proper dosage of all these herbs with a holistic veterinarian.

Vitamin Supplements
The antioxidant properties in Vitamin E benefit the prostate gland by supporting the immune system and discouraging the development of infections. Vitamin E also keeps the mucous membranes in good health. The anti-inflammatory agents contained in Vitamin C can help shrink the prostate back to its normal size.

Minerals
Kelp, a sea vegetable, is exceptionally high in nutrition and an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. It balances overall glandular activity and is naturally detoxifying. Asians have been using kelp for years to treat prostate problems. Lecithin, a compound found in all living cells, has antioxidant properties and supports the prostate's cell membranes. Zinc nourishes the prostate gland in general.

Homeopathy
Pulsatilla addresses acute prostate inflammation. This remedy is particularly useful to dogs exhibiting painful prostates and a yellow colored pus-like discharge that sometimes contains blood. Sabal serrulata, derived from saw palmetto, helps with enlarged prostates. Conium maculatum also helps enlarged prostates, particularly when the enlargement is combined with urinary difficulties. Chimaphila umbellata works to ease prostate inflammation, particularly in dogs that strain to urinate. The urine may also contain mucus. A homeopathic veterinarian will advise you on correct strengths and dosages for each of these remedies.

Canine Prostate Cancer
Canine prostate cancer is not common and, when it does occur, treatment options are limited. It generally is fatal. The homeopathic remedies described above can ease some of the clinical signs, however. The herbs, vitamins and minerals in Sections 1, 2 and 3 can provide a boost to the immune system, allowing it to fight the disease off a little longer.
