Cure Cancer: Natural Herbs for Prostate Cancer

By Pamela Gentry

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed yearly, and more than 31,900 men die from it every year. A relatively slow-growing cancer, prostate cancer is a disease which often strikes men 65 years or older and is also common for those who have had a close family member with prostate cancer.

Prevention
Studies conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic have concluded that drinking green tea on a daily basis significantly reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Taking the herb pygeum may also help prevent prostate cancer.

Slowing Cancer Growth
The spice turmeric contains an important antioxidant called curcumin, which may be effective in controlling prostate cancer cells. In addition, modified citrus pectin has been shown to substantially inhibit the growth of cancer cells and has shown to be effective in combating prostate cancer.

Other Helpful Beverages
Taken in tea form, buchu, carnivora, echinacea, goldenseal, Pau d'Arco and suma should be taken two at a time and alternated to best utilize their anti-cancer properties.

Natural compounds found in pomegranate juice have been proven by UCLA scientists to slow the development of prostate cancer.

Individual Herbs
Having the ability to balance the hormones and improve glandular function, damiana and licorice root are recommended for prostate cancer. Saw palmetto is also recommended.

Shown to slow cancer cell growth and improve immune function, garlic capsules are recommended to be taken three times a day for those with prostate cancer.

Dietary Recommendations
Eat plenty of whole grains, raw nuts and seeds. Be sure to include natural dietary sources of the chemical lycopene, which has been shown to protect against prostate cancer. These foods include tomatoes, grapefruit and watermelon. Foods rich in zinc should be included in your diet as it nourishes the prostate gland and is vital for proper immune function. Foods rich in zinc include seafood, spinach, sunflower seeds and mushrooms.
